Benefit Reporting Specialist

Your role.

  • Create engagement letters outlining framework of engagement. 
  • Create,track and confer with clients regarding data requests.
  • Analyze and prepare invoices for highest realization and follow-up on accounts receivables directly with client for Form 5500 engagements.
  • Consult with clients on Forms 5500, Forms 8955-SSA, and Summary Annual Reports.  Specifically, prepare, analyze and investigate various complex forms for small and large retirement plans, funded and unfunded welfare plans, and master trusts. 
  • Lead solutions for various Form 5500 reporting issues.
  • Proactively interact with key client management and internal contacts to gather information, resolve Form 5500 related issues, and make recommendations for business and process improvements that will directly impact the profitability of the engagement. Must be able to think through information received and make decisions based on own interpretation of the form and data received.
  • May have involvement in growing the business model within an increasingly complex technical area of the Firm. Specifically, will work directly with the client that will result in practice development opportunities including presentations and displaying technical expertise to gain confidence from client.
  • Streamline record keeping processes for Form 5500 engagements and look for opportunities to incorporate process improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with laws as well as with Firm policies and procedures. Must understand risks with engagements and filings.
  • Assist plan auditors in formulating responses to clients’ questions, in problem resolution and in form interpretation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:  

  • Associate's degree required, Bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • 0-3 years of experience in an employee benefits related field, professional legal, tax, or accounting services environment are preferred, but not required. Accounting or finance skills are preferred.
  • Form 5500 experience is highly preferred. Prior experience as a Benefit Specialist with specific Form 5500 preparation experience is a strong desire for candidates.
  • Be constantly engaged with staff and clients to exchange information.  Must be able to effectively think and process data, facts and figures in these situations.
  • Strong client service orientation and approach combined with creative problem solving skills; strong written and oral communication skills; the ability to work effectively as part of a team, yet function well with independent responsibilities.
  • Possess strong, proven organizational skills and the ability to successfully prioritize and handle multiple engagements and competing matters.
  • Highly motivated and take ownership of personal and professional growth and development.
  • Position may be based out of our Grand Rapids or Detroit office
